If you’re looking for a way to get a leg up on your fellow students, you can take a look at the next step in the physician’s career path: getting a Ph.
D. in a specific field.
While medical schools typically accept students who have completed four years of medical school, a growing number of physicians are now opting to apply to graduate medical programs in fields like dentistry, pediatrics and general surgery.
The move comes after decades of doctors turning down lucrative positions in fields where they were unlikely to be expected to perform well, according to experts.
“There’s a perception that the more you practice, the more qualified you will be for the job,” said Michael DeMarco, president of the American Association of Medical Colleges, which has a chapter of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
“But I think the reality is, a doctor is a good physician.
He or she will do a lot better than most people think.”1st and 10, San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints, 8:25 p.m.
